A short game made in 7 days for the MashUp Game Jam 2024, made by Hypnotik Fox using the Unity Game Engine, for the theme "A helping hand". the game is very simple and uses a 2D sketch/hand-draw style.
Important
This is the prototype for the art assets and the gameplay is lacking a lot, there are tons of bugs and enexpected behaviours so I added a lot of debugging tools! Even though the final result isn't a fully enjoyable experience I really liked working on the game and learned tons of important things, this was my 3rd game jam, it is the worst compared to my other jam projects, but I really liked this idea and would love to develop it further when I have more time and energy to do so! The game also doesn't has any sounds! The writing of the game is supposed to be a major focus with the non-existent gameplay loop (and single level aside from the hub world), it is supposed to be very cheesy and a more silly kind of humour, I wrote it all at 1am at the morning so that should explain what level of humour I'm talking about!
Description (what was supposed to be and what it is)
In Whisker Wars, you play as the Rat King, the leader of a rat village under attack by aliens. You can't directly deal damage and instead must use creative ways to defeat all the enemies, while not letting all your allies get defeated injured.
You must protect your village by using creative strategies, manipulating the environment. The game blends real time strategy encouraging you to use creative ways to defend your rat kingdom, save your rat villagers, with your rat attacks and rat crown and repel those nasty rat eating invaders and their cheesy smell.
You can push enemies, grab them closer to you or dash to avoid damage
Controls
Movement: Use the W/A/S/D keys or Arrow Keys to move the Rat King around the battlefield.
Dash: Spacebar or C to quickly dash forward, avoiding attacks and temporarily becoming immune to damage.
Push: Press Right Mouse Button or Z to push enemies in the direction you're aiming at. Use this to manipulate enemy positioning!
Grab: Press Left Mouse Button or X to bring enemies closer in the direction you're aiming at. Use this to manipulate enemy positioning also!
Zoom In/Out: Use the mouse wheel to change the size of the camera!
Pause: P, tab or esc to pause or switch to safe button mode in the main menu!
Deactivate Enemy Movement: press e!
Encountered Bugs
- Main Menu Buttons in the regular mode don't work 100% of times
- Sprite ordering iregullarities
- How to play extra button not working
- UI not scaling with screen size
Development
The programming, art, shaders, UI design, level design, story and everything was made by myself using the Unity Game Engine, I also used some other plugins like cinemachine, textmeshpro, dotween, navmeshplus and others.
I didn't had too much time to work on the game and I also made it all by myself thus the not so great quality!
The art is very stylized in a sketch/hand-draw style, however some effects break this hand-draw style to cause attention and highlight importancy, for example taking damage makes your character glitch out or the main menu has a twirl like effect!
